Mircea Geoană: The Republic of Moldova cannot be attacked militarily by the Russian Federation in the near future
The Russian Federation does not have the necessary resources to launch a classic military confrontation in the near future in the Republic of Moldova. The statement was made by the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană for the Radio Moldova reporter in Brussels. This answer was given in the context in which more and more international officials and experts claim that the Republic of Moldova could be the next target if Ukraine loses the war with Russia.
Mircea Geoană claims that Russia, in the relatively near term, does not have the capabilities to succeed in Ukraine.
Ukraine is the first line of defense for all of us, and for the Republic of Moldova and the Allied countries, we anticipate a Russian Federation that will remain aggressive and dangerous to our interests, but for a classic time military confrontation we do not see the Russian Federation with the necessary resources to endanger the Republic of Moldova. Instead, it is already endangering, and will continue to do so through hybrid means, through disinformation, by creating difficulties in various ways for the pro-European forces in Chisinau. That is why, we must be prepared to deal with an aggressive Russia, but not necessarily dangerous from a military point of view, claims the Deputy Secretary General of NATO, Mircea Geoană.
We remind you that the German newspaper Bild wrote a month ago that the Republic of Moldova would be Putin's next victim, which has minimal chances of resisting a Russian assault for more than a few hours. Also on Putin's list are countries such as Romania, Poland or the Baltic countries.
In an interview given to Free Europe from Romania, the Chief of the Defense Staff, General Vlad Gheorghiță stated that, in his opinion, the Russian Federation will not stop and, if it wins in Ukraine, then its main target will become the Republic of Moldova. Later, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu criticized Vlad Gheorghiță about these statements.
Previously, both the Minister of Foreign Affairs from Chisinau, Mihai Popșoi, and the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, declared that as long as the Russian troops are kept by the Ukrainians away from the borders of our country, there is no imminent risk of militarily attacking the Republic of Moldova.
