Moldova Mourns Russian Opposition Leader
Several people gathered last night at the headquarters of the Russian Federation Embassy in Chișinău to pay their final respects to Alexei Navalny, a Russian opposition figure and critic of the Kremlin.
People brought flowers and candles in memory of the Russian politician.
Alexei Navalny died on February 16th, 2024, in a Siberian prison at the age of 45. While the cause of death remains unreleased, Navalny had experienced declining health for several months. A leading critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Navalny was imprisoned in 2021 on charges widely believed to be politically motivated. His death has sparked protests across Russia and around the world. The Russian government has denied any wrongdoing in Navalny's death.
Last night, dozens of people came to the headquarters of the Russian Federation Embassy in Chișinău, where they laid flowers and lit candles in memory of a champion of freedom and democracy in Russia. This action was also attended by Russian citizens who took refuge in the Republic of Moldova due to the war started by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.
The Moldovan government also reacted to the news of the death of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. President Maia Sandu, Speaker of the Parliament Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Dorin Recean wrote on social networks that the politician's death in a Russian prison serves as a stark warning about the regime's suppression of opposition voices. The international community is also shocked by the sudden death of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
