The global food price index rose

The global food price index rose 14.3% in 2022, the highest level ever recorded. The increase comes amid rising costs of most food staples as disruptions caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine have heightened fears of food shortages, the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.

The FAO publishes its own product price index, which measures price changes in a food basket consisting of cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat and sugar. In 2022, this index rose to 143.7 points, the highest level since these data were published in 1990.

In 2022, the grain price index rose by 17.9%, due to market disturbances, in the wake of war, higher energy costs, inclement weather and robust global food demand.
