Poll: Only 10% of Europeans Believe Ukraine Can Win the War
Only 10% of Europeans believe Ukraine can defeat Russia in the war, according to a recent poll conducted across 12 European countries including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden, as reported by Euronews.
The poll, reported by euronews.ru, further revealed that 20% of respondents predict a Russian victory.
The poll, conducted ahead of the two-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, suggests that while European support for Kyiv remains high, many see a form of "compromise solution" as the most likely outcome.
Report authors argue that EU leaders should adopt a more "realistic" approach focused on identifying a path to a peace agreement in light of these findings. Study co-author Mark Leonard noted that EU leaders will need to shift their messaging around the war to justify continued European support for Ukraine.
Some experts warn that a peace deal involving the cession of Ukrainian territory could embolden the Kremlin and lead to future aggression. Others maintain that ending the bloodshed should be the primary goal. The poll was conducted in January. Since then, Moscow has gained a strategic and symbolic victory in the eastern Donetsk region after Ukrainian troops were forced to retreat from Avdiivka this weekend.
