Moldova: Farmers Block Border Crossing, Traffic Resumes
UPDATE: Access Road to Leușeni-Albița Customs Post Reopened, Traffic Resumes
The access road to the Leușeni Customs Post has been reopened, and traffic has resumed as normal, the Customs Service announces.
INITIAL NEWS: Farmers Again Block Access Road to Leușeni Customs Post
Farmers have again blocked the access road to the Leușeni Customs Post. The Customs Service recommends that carriers and travellers choose alternative customs posts, such as Sculeni, Costești, or Leova-Bumbăta.
One of the protest leaders, Sergiu Stefanco, stated that farmers drove tractors onto national roads in Fălești, Cahul, and several cities in Gagauzia.
"The customs office is blocked. Farmers are protesting because they feel discussions are unproductive and solutions are not being genuinely pursued. In Cahul, routes are blocked, and the same is true in Fălești. Farmers in Taraclia and Ceadîr-Lunga have gathered at an intersection near Balaban village and plan to start their tractors. This is not centrally organised; individual farmers are taking action," Stefanco said.
Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry could not be reached for comment.
The General Police Inspectorate reports officers are on the scene to redirect and manage traffic flow.
A new meeting between farmers and Agriculture Minister Vladimir Bolea is scheduled for tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. to discuss the agricultural situation and potential solutions proposed by authorities.
On February 20, during a meeting with Prime Minister Dorin Recean, farmers were offered access to state-guaranteed loans of up to half a million lei starting in March.
Farmers have staged several protests in recent weeks, including blocking road sections and border crossing points.
