UK Imposes New Russia Sanctions on Ukraine War Anniversary
The UK has announced new sanctions against Russia ahead of the two-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The UK's announcement aligns with the 13th round of sanctions against Russia agreed upon by EU ambassadors on February 21. The sanctions are set for formal approval on February 24th, symbolically marking the start of Russia's war, The Kyiv Independent reports.
The UK's package includes over 50 sanctions targeting individuals and companies that support Russia's war effort by providing military equipment and generating revenue for the Russian state.
"Ukraine has shown it will defend itself. Putin wrongly believed his invasion would be swift due to Russia's larger economy. But the economies of Ukraine's allies are 25 times larger than Russia's," said UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly.
"Our international economic pressure is denying Russia the means to continue this illegal invasion. Our sanctions starve Putin of the resources he desperately needs to fund his war."
The sanctions target Russian arms companies, importers and manufacturers of machine tools used to create military components, Russian natural resource exporters, and Russian diamond companies.
The new sanctions also extend to foreign entities that assist Russia in supplying sanctioned materials or circumventing existing regulations. This includes a Turkish company, two Belarusian entities, three China-based companies, and a Cypriot company linked to the transport of North Korean weapons to Russia.
