Moldova-Russia Tensions Rise Amid Ukraine War, EU Support
The war in Ukraine has reshaped Europe and shifted the priorities of Western European nations. As a result, the Republic of Moldova has become a focus for Western governments, receiving strong support, according to Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac.
The MEP asserts that Moldova has faced ongoing provocations from Russia, including interference in its internal politics through Kremlin-backed parties.
"Since declaring independence after the collapse of the USSR, Chisinau has been a constant target of challenges, starting with the Transnistrian conflict and then constant interference in the politics of the Republic of Moldova through parties subsidised and supported by Putin. Russia has always tried to strongly assert its influence over any opinion that the Republic of Moldova has on its agenda, especially regarding closer ties with Romania and the European Union," explained MEP Eugen Tomac.
Since Russia's war in Ukraine began, relations between Chisinau and Moscow have deteriorated, but a level of diplomatic communication has been maintained. However, last year the number of Russian officials at the Russian Embassy in the Republic of Moldova was reduced. The authorities claimed that a good part of the Russian diplomatic corps had the mission to destabilise our country and carry out actions that did not correspond to the standard procedures of diplomatic services.
