Transnistria Asks Russia for Protection Amid Moldova Tensions

Tiraspol has petitioned the Russian State Duma for protection from what it calls "growing pressure from the Republic of Moldova," according to a document approved at the Congress of Deputies held on February 28th.

Experts believe the request is directed at the Russian legislature, who lack decision-making power in foreign policy matters. They also note that the Transnistrian leadership, while aware of the potential consequences of conflict, is unlikely to seek a significant change in the status quo.

Moldovan authorities have dismissed the pronouncements as propaganda, emphasising their policies prioritise peace, security, and economic integration with the European Union, benefiting all citizens regardless of location.

Earlier, there were unconfirmed reports that Transnistria might seek annexation by Russia during the Congress. However, these claims were denied by Galina Antiufeeva, the vice-president of the self-proclaimed Supreme Soviet of Tiraspol. The Congress itself was convened in response to alleged economic pressure from Moldovan authorities.
