US Supports Moldova's Sovereignty amid Ukraine Conflict
The United States announced Wednesday its firm support for Moldova's sovereignty amidst rising tensions fueled by the conflict in neighbouring Ukraine.
This declaration comes in response to Tiraspol authorities seeking "protective measures" from Russia. According to AFP via Agerpres, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasised the U.S.'s stance on upholding Moldova's territorial integrity within its recognized borders.
In a significant move, the leadership of Transnistria, meeting in an extraordinary Congress on February 28, adopted a resolution backing the region's sovereignty and requesting Russian "protection" against mounting pressure from Chisinau.
Following the resolution's adoption, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that requests from Tiraspol separatists were under careful review. They highlighted the protection of Transnistrian interests as one of Russia's priorities.
Meanwhile, the Government of Moldova rebuffed Tiraspol "propagandistic statements." The Bureau for Reintegration Policies stressed that the Transnistrian region benefits from policies promoting peace, security, and economic integration with the European Union, which are advantageous for all citizens.
