Moldovan Farmers' Leader Quits Over Government Inaction
Moldova's agricultural sector is plunged into crisis, sparking widespread protests across the country. Farmers blame the government's inaction and broken promises for their financial struggles, fueling their demonstrations.
Alexander Slusari, the influential leader of the Farmers' Force Association, is stepping down as executive director due to the government's lack of support. "Following the record-breaking year for Moldovan agriculture in 2021, and despite a string of promises made during the 2020-2021 election campaigns, farmers are now facing financial ruin in the countryside. Meanwhile, transnational corporations are growing stronger, posing a significant threat to our nation's food security and rural areas," Slusari wrote in a statement.
The Farmers' Force Association has been a central force in organising the protests. Farmers have blocked several roads with agricultural equipment, including access to the Leuseni customs point, in an effort to pressure the government.
Moldova's Farmers Demand Action
Farmers are facing an urgent situation, and the government's failure to address their concerns could lead to even more severe consequences for the country's food security.
