Moldova Commemorates Two-Year Anniversary of EU Membership Application
The Republic of Moldova today marks the second anniversary of formally submitting its application for membership in the European Union.
President Maia Sandu reaffirmed the nation's commitment to the process, highlighting the positive decision by EU member states to initiate accession negotiations as a reward for Moldova's ongoing integration efforts.
“Accession to the European Union translates to improved conditions in our schools and kindergartens, modernised infrastructure, new bridges, well-equipped hospitals, and most importantly, lasting peace and security," President Sandu emphasised.
The President underscored Moldova's unwavering determination, stating, "Two years ago, we chose a clear European path for our country. We are prepared to take all necessary steps to achieve this fundamental national objective. Our citizens have mandated this future within the EU, and we are committed to the work ahead."
Daniela Morari, Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, characterised the initial membership application as "a courageous and timely initiative" given the geopolitical context.
"We are confident that Moldova's demonstrated efforts and progress will provide a solid foundation for advancement in this process, specifically the successful opening of formal negotiations as the next step," Ambassador Morari stated.
Moldova's application for EU membership was submitted on March 4, 2022, by Ambassador Morari to Ambassador Philippe Leglise-Costa, then-Permanent Representative of France to the EU (France held the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union). Moldova subsequently completed the European Commission's questionnaire in two stages, with responses provided on April 22 and May 12. On June 23, 2022, the European Council granted Moldova the status of a candidate country for EU accession. To pave the way for negotiations, Moldova received nine specific recommendations. With the majority of these recommendations fulfilled, the European Council made the decision to commence accession negotiations on December 14, 2023.
