The ceasefire declared by Russia in Ukraine has ended. Fighting continued in different areas during the 36 hours.
The BBC's correspondent in the Ukrainian city of Bahmut heard repeated explosions. Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Vladimir Putin's offer of truce for Orthodox Christmas was a scam. "The world could see again how false are the words coming from any level, from Moscow. They said something about a supposed ceasefire, but the reality is that Russian missiles hit Bahmut and other Ukrainian positions again," the Ukrainian president said. Zelenskiy said that peace will return to Ukraine only when Russian forces are removed. Zelenski also announced that there is "an intermediate result" in terms of sanctions for Russians who support the war and those who help them. "All those whose voice sounds in unison with the roar of Russian artillery will be isolated from the civilized world," he emphasized.
