Maia Sandu requests European support for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine at the EPP Congress in Bucharest
The Russian Federation wants to include the Republic of Moldova in its sphere of influence without taking into account human rights and freedom of expression, said President Maia Sandu at the Congress of the European People's Party (EPP) which is being held today and tomorrow in Bucharest. The head of state asked the members of the EPP to be in solidarity with Ukraine because the future fate of the Republic of Moldova depends on this country.
"Russia thinks it doesn't have to ask smaller countries like us what we really want. The Moldovan people chose another path today. The Republic of Moldova is not at the table of discussions as Russia wants to decide, instead the Republic of Moldova is at the table with all the people who have made a sovereign and conscious choice not to live in fear of influence. It is our firm choice to go free in democracy. More than ever, we need firm and credible European support for this election."
Ukraine needs full support from all free European countries, there is nothing more urgent than the return to peace, said Maia Sandu.
"We gathered here today at a critical time for freedom and for liberal democracies that are under attack right now. That is why our democracies must rally, democracies that value human rights, democracy and a liberal society. This is the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous world."
The head of state also highlighted the fact that the EPP was the party that most strongly supported the integration of Moldova into the EU.
We remind you that Maia Sandu, the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and the Prime Minister Dorin Recean are participating today in the EPP Congress in Bucharest, one of the largest transnational political formations, represented in the Parliament of the European Union.
The forum, which brings together more than 2,000 delegates from 40 countries, takes place in the context of the European Parliament elections in June.
