Emmanuel Macron: The democratic reality of the Republic of Moldova and its aspiration to the European future is a challenge for Putin's Russia
As Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine enters its third year, its repercussions continue to threaten the stability of all of Europe, especially the Republic of Moldova, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a joint press conference with head of state Maia Sandu. The French leader referred to the violation of the airspace of the Republic of Moldova by Russian drones and missiles.
French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the Republic of Moldova had to deal with unacceptable violations of its airspace by Russian drones and missiles, in addition to the major economic consequences triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"We are witnessing disinformation campaigns and interference attempts aimed at the very clear division of Moldovan society, undermining the population's trust in democratic institutions and, basically, trying to obstruct the country's European ambitions by limiting its sovereignty. The democratic reality of the Republic of Moldova and its aspiration to the European future, like that of Ukraine, represents a challenge for Vladimir Putin's Russia".
President Maia Sandu said that France stood by the Republic of Moldova, offering support during the last two years of unrest caused by Russia's actions.
"We, in the Republic of Moldova, know that the Kremlin's expansionist goals extend beyond Ukraine. Russia's aggressive actions to undermine democracy in Moldova are proof of this. The regime in Moscow is trying to control my country through energy blackmail, sponsoring protests, running disinformation campaigns, launching cyber attacks, interfering in our elections, infiltrating dirty money and even attempting a coup. Moldovans have the right to decide their own future, and this future is in the European Union".
We remind that, in Paris, President Maia Sandu will discuss with other French officials and representatives of international organizations. The head of state will also meet with Moldovans settled in France.
