Moldova: Russia Targets Weak Spots Before EU Talks
The Institute for the Study of War warns that the Kremlin is aiming to exploit vulnerabilities in Moldova through the breakaway regions of Transnistria and Gagauzia.
These efforts are seen as attempts to destabilise the country ahead of its crucial EU accession talks and presidential elections scheduled for later this year.
This development follows a social media announcement by Irina Vlah, the Bashkan of Gagauzia, regarding her meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi. Vlah reportedly informed Putin about the Moldovan government's stance towards the Gagauz Autonomy and shared a photo of their encounter.
Furthermore, Vlah claims that Putin reportedly promised support for Gagauzia and the Gagauz people in their pursuit of international recognition of their rights and legal positions.
Adding to the concerns, Moldova's Intelligence and Security Service, led by Alexandru Musteata, recently expressed apprehension about Moscow planning further destabilisation attempts. Musteata suggests a potential resurgence of protests in the coming months, with the Gagauz Autonomy and Tiraspol (capital of Transnistria) being used to pressure the Chisinau authorities.
