Orban Urges Trump's Return: Hope for Ukraine's Peace?
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban met with former US President Donald Trump at Trump's official residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
They discussed a wide range of issues affecting both Hungary and the United States, emphasising the importance of strong borders to protect each nation's sovereignty, as stated by Trump.
Following the meeting, Orban urged Trump to consider returning to the White House, suggesting that his presidency could bring peace to Ukraine, which has been battling Russia's invasion for over two years.
"It was a pleasure to visit President Donald Trump today. We need respected world leaders who can bring peace. He is one of them!" Orban posted.
Orban highlighted the peace during Trump's presidency in the Middle East and Ukraine, suggesting that there might not have been a war in Ukraine if Trump had been reelected in 2020.
Trump's criticism of US aid to Ukraine aligns with his "America First" foreign policy. This stance has contributed to the deadlock in Congress regarding aid to Ukraine.
US President Joe Biden criticised Trump for meeting Orban, stating that the Hungarian Prime Minister "seeks dictatorship."
Russia's war against Ukraine began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and escalated into full-scale warfare on February 24, 2022.
The relationship between Hungary and Ukraine has worsened since Russia's invasion. Orban's ties with Russia have hindered the European Union's support for Ukraine.
Hungary has opposed Ukraine's accession to NATO and the European Union, blocking EU financial support for Ukraine. Orban has previously criticised Ukraine's financial sovereignty, attributing its dependence on international aid.
