Siegfried Mureșan calls for more support for candidate countries

MEP Siegfried Mureșan called for more support for EU candidate countries in the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

He stressed that the negotiations are also in the interest of the EU bloc, and for this reason the European institutions must be more actively engaged to support these countries.

"The countries do not meet these accession criteria yet, but the message must be clear: we will support them. We, the European institutions, will be more actively engaged in helping these countries to modernise to meet the accession criteria. Negotiations are good for the candidate countries, but they are also good for the European Union, because they are the most effective tool we have to modernise and reform these countries, to bring them closer to European standards. It is not only in the interest of these countries, but also in our own interest. The safer the candidate countries are, the safer we are, and the safer the Union's borders are. That's why more ambition, more commitment on our part, clearer criteria, but once the criteria are met the door must be open and we must work together as pro-European forces," said Muresan.

In June 2022, the European Union granted the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine candidate status.
