EU Backs Georgieva for Second IMF Term
All 27 EU countries support Kristalina Georgieva serving a second term as head of the International Monetary Fund, Belgian Finance Minister Vincent Van Peteghem confirmed on Tuesday.
Georgieva, a 70-year-old economist from Bulgaria, has expressed her interest in a second term. Her current term expires on September 30.
Van Peteghem emphasised the EU's confidence in Georgieva's leadership, citing her work during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing Ukraine crisis. He noted the support she has provided to member states during these challenging times.
During Georgieva's tenure, the IMF has repeatedly assisted countries facing financial difficulties stemming from the pandemic and the economic fallout of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Belgian minister expressed his hope that the IMF would make a speedy decision on her reappointment.
