Latvian MEP Under Investigation for Alleged Russian Intelligence Ties
The Latvian authorities have commenced a criminal investigation against Tatjana Zdanoka, a Member of the European Parliament, for potential collaboration with Russian intelligence services, as reported by the Leta news agency on Saturday, citing DPA.
The criminal proceedings were initiated on February 22. The Riga authorities have not disclosed any additional details regarding the ongoing investigations.
Tatjana Zdanoka has served as a Member of the European Parliament since 2004 and does not belong to any political group.
The European Parliament is conducting a separate investigation into the allegations against the Latvian MEP.
She is accused of being recruited by Russian intelligence services to propagate pro-Kremlin views in the Baltic states.
For this purpose, Zdanoka is reported to have been guided by two agents, at least during the period of 2004-2017, based on email messages containing correspondence to this effect.
