Macron's Move: France Boosts Influence in Eastern Europe
French President Emmanuel Macron's remarks on troop deployment in Ukraine and the decision to send a military attaché to Moldova signify France's bid to assert itself as a leader in this region of Europe, as stated by political analyst Mihai Isac on Radio Moldova's "Parallel 47" program.
Isac suggests that France and Moldova should strengthen their security cooperation, welcoming the decision to send a French military attaché to Chisinau.
"Moldova has a tradition of military collaboration with soldiers from France, particularly noteworthy as Moldova contributes troops to Kosovo and Lebanon. Moldova, a member of the Francophonie, typically integrates its diaspora well in France, experiencing no acclimatisation or integration issues in work or education. We should question why nothing has been done until now. French interest has notably surged following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, as France seeks to reclaim certain areas of influence," Isac stated.
Recently, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi announced that Paris is sending a military attaché to operate from the French Embassy in Chisinau. Notably, defence ministers from Paris and Chisinau have signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in defence policy, international missions, and airspace management, aiming to modernise Moldova's National Army with French support.
