Parents to Pay for Moldova's After-School Care

The Ministry of Education and Research will approve a funding methodology for the activity of extended-day groups, after this service was suspended by the municipal authorities, announced Dan Perciun, the Minister of Education and Research.

According to the Minister, prices will be set depending on the duration of the program and will vary between 350 and 500 lei.

“In principle, there will be a regulation approved by the Ministry of Education. This will establish the cost of extended-day groups (three or six hours) and allow educational institutions to collect these fees from parents if they are willing to pay. Such fees also require approval by the Municipal Council, but we have decided to provide approval at the ministry level since the Municipal Council is not currently available to do so”, stated Dan Perciun.

At the beginning of the year, the municipal authorities announced the interruption of the activity of the extended-day groups for students who study in primary classes, due to the lack of financial resources. The mayor of the capital, Ion Ceban, accused the government of allocating too little money to the municipality, stating this as the reason the activity of these groups cannot be ensured.
