Ensuring Diaspora Representation: Examining Postal Voting Risks
The Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United States, Viorel Ursu, articulated on the "Realitatea te privește" (Reality cares for you) program on Realitatea that the acceptance of postal voting is favoured, and its examination is imperative due to the necessity of introducing alternatives for the diaspora, particularly in nations where the distance to polling stations is substantial and travel expenses are considerable.
As per the diplomat's statement, in the United States, certain citizens may undertake journeys of up to 4-5 hours in one direction to cast their votes.
Viorel Ursu highlighted that every procedure entails inherent risks; even voting at polling stations is not exempt. Consequently, there exist laws and regulations aimed at mitigating these risks. Additionally, provisions are made regarding the establishment of polling stations, appointment of observers, and delegation of trusted individuals by political parties. These risks are slated for examination in public debates.
Furthermore, Ambassador Viorel Ursu noted that there are approximately 90,000 Moldovans residing in the United States of America.
