Export of plums to Germany has increased 30 times in the last four years
The amount of plums exported to Germany has increased considerably over the last few years, from several hundred to thousands of tons delivered. If in 2017, more than 200 tons of plums were exported, then in 2021 an amount of about six thousand tons was recorded, according to the data of the German Agricultural Market Information Agency.
"Moldova Fruct" representatives claim that our country is achieving success in this market. According to them, smaller quantities of plums were also exported to Ukraine last year.
In 2022, more than 50 percent of plums were exported to the European Union, and a considerable part ended up in Germany. According to the data of the German Agricultural Market Information Agency, the Republic of Moldova is the source of 30-40 percent of the volume of plums imported by Germans. The export of plums to Germany started in 2017, and the volumes are increasing, Vitalie Gorincioi, the president of the Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters "Moldova Fruct", said in an interview for Radio Moldova. He also said that this year, plum exports to the European Union exceeded the allowed amount of 40 thousand tons. Moreover, small quantities of Moldovan plums also arrived in Ukraine. *"Actually, they also go to other markets, from Germany they go to Austria, France, Italy. Most of the quality, fresh plums went to the European Union and of course the local market, we are talking about the CIS market, such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, even Ukraine we exported a part. We are very interested, because it is a big market, the European Union market has 500 million consumers, a market that is predictable, our place is in this market. From the end of August to the end of October is the period when we deliver to these countries, especially to Germany," said Vitalie Gorincioi.
In 2022, the Republic of Moldova recorded a harvest of about 70 thousand tons of plums, 35 percent less than in 2021, mainly due to the drought. Our country is among the top ten exporters of fresh plums in the world. Annually, the Republic of Moldova exports between 45 and 50 thousand tons. Domestic plums are mainly sold in Germany, Austria, Poland, the Netherlands and Romania.
We remind you that in the middle of July last year, the European Union doubled, for one year, the quotas of Moldovan products that can be exported without customs duties on the EU market. These include plums, apples, grapes, grape juice, cherries, garlic and tomatoes.
