Understanding Russia's Tactics: Hybrid Warfare in Moldova
Russia refrains from direct military aggression against the Republic of Moldova due to its current incapacity and foreseeable inability to do so in the near future. Instead, it pursues a strategy of hybrid warfare, aiming to undermine the Moldovan economy and destabilise the nation.
Dorin Recean, the head of the Executive in Chișinău, emphasised in an interview with Euronews Romania that Russia's approach involves deploying misinformation, false narratives, and disinformation campaigns not only within Moldova but also extending to Romania and other European Union member states.
Recean pointed out the involvement of various political actors, some based in Chișinău and others in Bucharest, in this complex scenario. He highlighted Russia's expanding hybrid warfare tactics, which pose significant challenges not only to Moldova but also to the broader region. These tactics, characterised by the dissemination of false information and narratives, are aimed at sowing discord and instability.
The Moldovan authorities have previously underscored the multifaceted challenges posed by hybrid warfare, emphasising attempts to destabilise the internal situation. This underscores the complexity of the threat faced by the Republic of Moldova and the necessity for a coordinated response at both national and international levels.
