Impact of the European Parliament elections on the future of the European Union, analyzed by experts
The European Parliament elections will have an impact both in the medium and the long terms, because the future of the European Union will depend on their results, said the executive director of the Global Focus Center from Bucharest, Oana Popescu Zamfir, on the "Paralela 47" show on Radio Moldova . The challenges currently faced by the countries in the community space are both external and internal, the expert said.
"We are at a time when there is a war on the border, beyond that Russia's ambitions do not stop at Ukraine. It is clear that we are in a fierce geopolitical competition with the Russian Federation in our immediate neighborhood and in the global context to defend this system that gives us stability, peace, predictability. We are also talking about the quality of democracy and the values on which Europe is based from now on, because we see a challenge from within by radical, nationalist, xenophobic groups in many countries, practically in all member states".
We remind that the elections for the European Parliament will take place between June 6-9. Citizens of the Republic of Moldova who also hold the citizenship of Romania, a member state of the European Union, will be able to participate in this election.
Details about the polling stations to be opened on the territory of the Republic of Moldova are to be provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest.
The election is held every five years and is the largest transnational election in the world. More than 400 million eligible voters are called to vote at the same time for their political representatives in the European Parliament. Following the election, Parliament votes to elect the new head of the European Commission, which is the EU's executive body, and to approve the entire team of commissioners.
