Sweden is going to restore the compulsory civil service, abolished in 2008
Sweden will restore the compulsory civil service, abolished in 2008, considering the degradation of the security situation in the area as a result of the war in Ukraine, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced, according to the EFE agency.
He told a press conference that the measure was part of the project to strengthen the national defence, and the Agency for Civil Emergencies would receive the task of drawing up a plan on Thursday, which would initially be focused on municipal emergency services.
The reintroduction of the civil service would initially target between 1,500 and 2,000 people, who will have to follow a training program.
Sweden has taken several defence-boosting measures over the past decade, citing tensions with Russia in the region, and in 2017 reinstated compulsory military service that had been suspended seven years earlier.
