Press Review: Moldovan Politician Raises Concerns Over Manipulation in Gagauzia
In a recent television interview, Oazu Nantoi, a member of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), voiced apprehensions regarding the exploitation of divisive rhetoric in Gagauzia, stirring xenophobic, anti-Romanian, and anti-European Union sentiments that impact internal political processes.
Nantoi cautioned against easy manipulation of Gagauz citizens by Kremlin-backed demagogues, urging recognition of responsible segments within the population while denouncing external manipulation.
Highlighting the abnormal situation surrounding figures like Ilan Șor, who claimed victory in Gagauzia's elections, Nantoi warned against attempts to leverage autonomy for anti-state agendas. He stressed the need for law enforcement to address provocateurs and advocated for coherent policies from central authorities, contrasting the 30-year lack thereof.
Additionally, discussions have arisen regarding Moldova's energy security and geopolitical stance. Energy expert Sergiu Tofilat asserted the imperative of rejecting Russian gas, citing Ukraine's defence efforts as pivotal for Moldova's security. Emphasising support from the European Union and other allies, Tofilat urged against funding any aggression towards Ukraine.
Security concerns extend beyond energy, with security expert Artur Leșcu raising alarms over the lack of defence against Russian drones, emphasising the imminent threat they pose. Leșcu highlighted the drone proliferation and their potential for devastating impact, underscoring the need for defensive capabilities.
In a move to enhance national security and defence capabilities, the European Union has announced assistance measures under the European Peace Instrument. These measures aim to bolster Moldova's defence forces' operational effectiveness and compliance with EU standards, enhancing civilian protection during crises.
Amidst these discussions, Minister of Agriculture Vladimir Bolea emphasised the economic ramifications of agricultural agreements within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), warning against abrupt termination, which could disrupt trade and livelihoods.
Political commentator Ion Tăbârță stressed the importance of political will and successful reforms in advancing Moldova's European integration, foreseeing a reduction in Euroscepticism through tangible improvements in living standards.
In a separate investigative report, concerns were raised over the asset acquisitions of government ministers, shedding light on potentially questionable financial dealings within the administration.
Lastly, efforts to rehabilitate earthquake-damaged buildings, such as the five-story block in Șoldănești, have garnered attention, with President of Parliament Igor Grosu inspecting ongoing reconstruction efforts, signalling progress towards resettling affected families.
