NATO's Geoană: Strengthening Security for Moldova and Ukraine
As the eastern side of NATO strengthens and Ukraine consolidates its position, Moldova finds itself in a more secure environment, less vulnerable to Russian disinformation and aggression.
These remarks were conveyed by Mircea Geoană, NATO's Deputy Secretary General, during an interview with Moldova 1 amid the ongoing NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting.
Geoană emphasised NATO's commitment to its partners, stressing the applicability of the central obligation and Article 5 to allied countries, including Romania, Moldova's neighbour to the west. He expressed hope for Ukraine's eventual inclusion as a new ally, recognizing the ongoing complexities of the conflict. Geoană affirmed NATO's belief in Ukraine's alignment with the Euro-Atlantic community, anticipating that as Ukraine strengthens and NATO's eastern side fortifies, Moldova will benefit from a more stable and secure environment.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy that Romania's Ministry of National Defense has proposed a draft law for public consultation. This legislation introduces the concept of Romania's intervention to safeguard its citizens abroad for the first time, with potential application to Romanian citizens in Moldova.
Experts contend that the security of the Black Sea region, including Moldova, is subject to examination by major powers. Romania's decision not to unilaterally draft legislation enabling intervention in Moldova in the event of Russian military aggression underscores the ongoing diplomatic considerations and complexities surrounding regional security.
