Moldova Bans Russian Imperial Flag, Deems it Extremist

The display of the imperialist flag within the Republic of Moldova conflicts with the nation's democratic aspirations and poses a historical affront.

This is the assessment of heraldry expert, Vlad Mischevca.

Speaking to Radio Moldova, Mischevca explained the flag's symbolism as representing the Russian Empire's monarchy, which collapsed in February 1917. He noted the flag's continued promotion by the Russian Federation.

"The black-white-gold colours symbolised the Romanov monarchy and the Russian Empire. Though the empire fell in 1917, Russian monarchists persist and thrive within the current Russian Federation. For us, citizens of the Republic of Moldova, the display of such flags on our territory is a provocation. They represent a history that is not our own," stated Vlad Mischevca.

Importantly, the Chisinau Court, Center headquarters, has deemed the Kremlin-promoted tricolour an extremist symbol associated with the "New Russia" movement. Consequently, the Russian imperialist flag, in its white-yellow-black colours, is now illegal within Moldova. This decision is subject to appeal at the Chisinau Court of Appeal within 30 days.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Moldovan Parliament amended the Contravention Code to prohibit symbols that promote war. This includes the letters "Z" and "V", as well as the St. George's ribbon.

Failure to comply with these prohibitions can be punished according to the Contravention Code. Fines range from 4,500 to 9,000 lei for individuals. For legal entities or persons holding public office, the fine can reach up to 30,000 lei.
