Population and Housing Census begins in the Republic of Moldova

The population and housing census starts in the Republic of Moldova. For the first time, reviewers will collect the information not on paper, but directly on tablets, and those who refuse to provide personal data risk being fined. Reviewers will ask citizens about year and place of birth, place of residence, language spoken, level of education, occupation and other aspects.

Thus, starting today and until July 7, about 4 thousand reviewers will go from house to house to collect data about citizens and about housing.

The costs of the census are estimated at 370 million lei, of which 329 million are from the state budget. The rest of the money is provided by the European Union.

The head of the Census department at the National Bureau of Statistics, Dorin Lozovanu, said for Radio Moldova that participation in the Census is mandatory and people who refuse to fill in the questionnaires and cannot be convinced by any method, risk a fine of up to 2500 lei.

Authorities estimate that the first results will be published six months after the census is completed. Also, they said that the information provided is confidential and protected by law, used for statistical purposes.

According to Prime Minister Dorin Recean, the data collected at the 2024 Population and Housing Census will help in the transparent distribution of financial resources for the development of localities in the Republic of Moldova.

We remind that the population and housing census is carried out once every 10 years, being the most important national statistical exercise that provides the complete demographic picture of the country. The last Census took place in 2014 and last over two weeks.
