Detailed Process Unveiled for Selecting New Attorney General

By next week at the latest, a new competition for the position of Attorney General will be announced, as conveyed by Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, the Minister of Justice, during an interview with PROTV.

She emphasised that adjustments have been made to the Regulation governing the competition process to mitigate the risk of corruption. Additionally, the Minister affirmed that individuals who participated in the previous competition remain eligible.

"We have meticulously deliberated upon the regulation pertaining to the selection of the Attorney General, including consultations with the European Commission. It has been mutually agreed that amendments should be minimal while effectively preventing any irregularities. The draft regulation is publicly accessible on the CSP's platform, with the competition set to be officially announced no later than next week. Following this announcement, there will be a window for submission of applications, extending for a minimum of 30 days. Subsequently, within a 20-day period, applications will undergo scrutiny, information will be collated from various institutions, and interview schedules will be finalised," stated the Minister of Justice.

The Minister's statement comes after the annulment of the outcomes of the previous competition, a decision prompted by significant disparities discovered in the evaluation process by the Superior Council of Prosecutors.

It is pertinent to recall that Alexandr Stoianoglo, the former Attorney General, was relieved of his duties by presidential decree on September 26th. Stoianoglo is currently under investigation in multiple cases, though he has secured a favourable ruling in one instance from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
