Legal Controversy: Central Electoral Commission Denies Referendum Initiative
The Moldovan Central Electoral Commission has dismissed the petition put forth by "Our Party," led by Renato Usatîi, regarding the registration of an initiative group aimed at organising a consultative republican referendum on the prospect of holding early parliamentary elections.
According to Pavel Postica, Vice President of the CEC, the initiation of such an action runs contrary to constitutional provisions.
Postica remarked, "Announcing publicly, with foreknowledge of the outcome of examining this request, misleads voters and goes against the opinions of the Constitutional Court, implying that we would commit a violation of the law. We are well aware that the CEC would intervene. Indeed, the Central Electoral Commission would take action if there were any breaches of the law. Through this draft decision, we have presented clear examples of what, from our perspective, constitutes a violation of legislation."
It is pertinent to recall that on March 26, "Our Party," under the leadership of Renato Usatîi, submitted documents to the CEC for the registration of the Initiative Group. If approved, this group would assume responsibility for gathering signatures to initiate a referendum where citizens would indicate their stance on early parliamentary elections.
