Moldova, France Deepen Military Ties
The Moldovan government has approved the ratification of an agreement on military cooperation with France.
The agreement, signed in Paris on March 7, 2024, by the Moldovan and French defence ministers, establishes a joint commission that will convene annually to develop a plan of action for both countries' defence authorities.
This new agreement is seen as necessary due to the evolving international security landscape, according to Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi. "This agreement strengthens bilateral cooperation in the military field and adjusts the legal framework to the current security situation," Minister Nosatîi said. "The ratification of this agreement will allow the defence institutions of both Moldova and France to expand cooperation in several areas, both on a bilateral level and within international organisations."
Previously, military cooperation between Moldova and France was governed by an agreement signed in Paris on July 15, 1998. The new agreement, however, is for an indefinite term.
The agreement covers a broad range of areas for collaboration, including:
- Defence policy and strategy
- Military education and training
- Peacekeeping operations
- Defence research and development
- Military logistics
- Cybersecurity
- Counter-terrorism
- Disaster relief
The ratification of this agreement is expected to bolster military cooperation between Moldova and France and contribute to the security of both nations.
