Moldova Condemns Iran's Attack on Israel, Backs De-Escalation Efforts

The Republic of Moldova vehemently condemns Iran's unprecedented missile and drone assault on Israel and pledges full support for international efforts to quell escalation.

President Maia Sandu conveyed this stance via the X platform.

"We stand in solidarity with all those advocating for peace in the Middle East and beyond," stated President Sandu.

It is noteworthy that numerous world leaders have denounced the Iranian attack and voiced their backing for Israel.

China has also voiced "deep concern" over the escalation, urging relevant parties to maintain calm and exhibit restraint to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

In recent months, American officials have consistently urged Beijing to leverage its influence on Iran to mitigate the risk of a regional conflict. China, having been Iran's largest trading partner in the past decade, purchasing 90% of its oil exports, holds a strategic position in these efforts.

On the night of April 13-14, Iran launched an extensive drone and missile strike on Israel in retaliation for the bombing of the Tehran Consulate in Damascus.

Of the approximately 300 unmanned vehicles deployed, Israeli defence systems successfully intercepted 99%, underscoring Israel's robust preparedness for such aerial assaults.

A decision regarding a potential Israeli response remains pending, with a resolution expected today. Furthermore, the UN Security Council will convene urgently on Sunday to address the escalating situation in the Middle East, a meeting instigated by Israel. In a letter, Israel underscored that the attacks "pose a serious threat to international peace and security."

Iran, for its part, has justified its actions to the Council, citing self-defence under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and in response to Israel's recurrent military aggression.
