EU Road Deaths Rise: Romania Leads in Fatalities

The number of people killed in road accidents in the European Union increased by 4% in 2022 compared to 2021, according to data published by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).

According to the statistical data, Romania had the highest road fatality rate, while Sweden recorded the lowest.

Eurostat reports that in 2022, road accidents caused the deaths of approximately 21,000 people across the European Union, marking a 4% increase from 2021 when there were over 19,900 deaths. The data shows that the number of deaths has increased for two consecutive years, following the unprecedented decline in 2020, which was attributed to COVID-19 restrictions that affected passenger transport.

In 2022, the EU member states recorded an average of 46 road traffic deaths per million inhabitants.

Compared to the population of each EU member state, the highest rate of road traffic fatalities was in Romania – 86 deaths per million inhabitants. This is followed by Bulgaria, with 78 deaths per million inhabitants, and Croatia, with 71 deaths.

On the other hand, the lowest rate of road traffic fatalities in 2022 was observed in Sweden, where there were 22 deaths per million inhabitants, Denmark, and Ireland.
