Moldova Goes Digital: Birth & Death Certificates Online

Moldova is transitioning to a digital system for issuing birth and death certificates, following the approval of the "Medical Certification of Birth and Death" Information System by the government.

This new system, accessible only to authorised users, will streamline data exchange between institutions and facilitate the creation of statistical reports, according to Health Minister Ala Nemerenco.

Previously, there was no national information system to register births and deaths. Under the current process, medical professionals issue paper certificates that individuals must then pick up from the medical institution and present to the Public Services Agency. The agency then transcribes the information onto another paper document before it can be used for other purposes.

"This new system eliminates these unnecessary steps," explained Minister Nemerenco. "The Ministry of Health, with the support of the Electronic Governance Agency, is developing the system under the 'Modernization of Government Services in the Republic of Moldova' project, funded by the World Bank."
