Moldova Stands with Ukraine: Sanctions & EU Dreams
Since the war's outset, Moldova has expressed unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and its people, unequivocally condemning Russia's invasion.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Doina Gherman reiterated this unwavering support during a joint press conference today with her Ukrainian counterpart, Olena Kondratiuk. Gherman emphasised that the Moldovan authorities continue to provide aid to the over 117,000 Ukrainian refugees currently seeking shelter in Moldova.
"The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine enjoy strong bilateral relations, and I am pleased to note our ongoing dynamic political dialogue," Gherman declared. "Our countries share the same aspirations for a free, democratic, and prosperous future. As long as Ukraine remains unsafe, Moldova's security is also under threat."
Deputy Speaker Kondratiuk of the Ukrainian Supreme Rada expressed hope that both Moldova and Ukraine can begin negotiations on EU accession by mid-June. She also urged the Moldovan Parliament to sign the Declaration condemning the Russian Federation's actions in Ukraine. This Declaration, according to Ukrainian sources, details the deportation of over 20,000 Ukrainian children during the two years of conflict. The document has already garnered signatures from Canada, the United States, Poland, and the Baltic States.
"I am hopeful that by mid-June, both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova will be able to initiate negotiations on accession to the European Union," Kondratiuk stated. "I extend my gratitude for Ukraine's unwavering support to the declarations adopted by the Moldovan Parliament. Regional peace, and potentially global peace, hinges on peace in Ukraine. We have requested the adoption of an additional declaration focused on securing justice. This declaration condemns the Russian Federation's involvement in the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. Our investigations have identified more than 20,000 children who have been forcibly transferred from Ukrainian territory."
The Deputy Speaker from Kyiv further emphasised the importance of Moldova continuing its sanctions policy on Moscow. This policy aims to utilise Russia's frozen assets for Ukraine's reconstruction efforts. Additionally, both countries pledged collaboration to counter disinformation campaigns.
