Moldova: Press Freedom Protest Marks Global Day
Marking World Press Freedom Day, the Independent Journalism Center (CJI) organised a flash mob in front of the Russian Embassy in Chișinău.
Their rallying cry was "United for Press Freedom. Truth Cannot Be Suppressed!"
Media experts underscored the critical importance of press freedom in the current climate. They emphasised that journalists face growing systemic challenges that increasingly impede their ability to carry out their work effectively.
In an interview with Radio Moldova, Petru Macovei, Executive Director of the Independent Press Association, highlighted the mounting pressure on journalists. He pointed out that press freedom is being restricted by a number of factors.
Local and regional journalists, in particular, struggle to access information of public interest. This is because local and regional authorities often confuse the right to access information with the right to petition.
World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on May 3. It was established in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following a recommendation adopted at the UNESCO General Conference in 1991.
