White House Hosts Romania's President: Marking 20 Years of NATO Partnership
President Joe Biden is scheduled to host his Romanian counterpart, Klaus Iohannis, at the White House today, May 7, commemorating the 20th anniversary of Romania's NATO membership.
This event was announced by the White House in a press release, which was also confirmed by the Presidential Administration. According to the official agenda, President Biden will welcome President Iohannis at 1:30 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. in Romania).
In an official statement signed by White House spokesperson Karine Jean Pierre, it is stated that President Biden will express gratitude to President Iohannis for hosting American soldiers in Romania. Additionally, he will acknowledge Romania's significant contributions as a loyal NATO ally to security on NATO's eastern flank, particularly in the Black Sea region.
The White House further emphasises that the leaders will underscore their ongoing support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression. They will also review various areas of cooperation between Romania and the United States, including energy, economic collaboration, and shared democratic values.
During his visit to the USA, Klaus Iohannis will be awarded the "Distinguished International Leadership Award" by the Atlantic Council, an American think tank, on May 8. This recognition honours his remarkable career, exemplary leadership of Romania, and his role as a transatlantic and European leader. The announcement was made via a statement published on the organisation's website on Tuesday.
Since 1996, the Council has been honouring prominent international leaders at its annual awards gala. This tradition reflects the Council's commitment to recognizing and celebrating excellence in leadership on the global stage.
