Stability Priority: Moldova Guarantees Russian Gas Supply to Transnistria

The Republic of Moldova will not impede the delivery of Russian gas to the separatist region of Transnistria, even as the agreement governing the transit of this gas through Ukraine is set to expire this year.

Energy Minister Victor Parlicov made this statement on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters and cited by Agerpres.

Authorities in Kiev have no plans to extend the agreement for transporting Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine, an agreement slated to expire at the end of this year. This development implies that deliveries to Transnistria may also come to a halt.

During a state visit to Norway aimed at fostering cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, Victor Parlicov assured that the government in Chisinau would not obstruct the deliveries of Russian gas to Transnistria.

"Under no circumstances will we disrupt the flow of Russian gas to the region. We believe that, in collaboration with Ukraine, we can find a solution to maintain stability in the Transnistrian region," stated Victor Parlicov.

Subsequently, during a meeting with business leaders and Norwegian government officials, Victor Parlicov emphasised that Transnistria's stability would be jeopardised if gas deliveries ceased. "We will handle the situation calmly; we do not want tensions to escalate," the Moldovan official clarified.

In the past, the Republic of Moldova heavily relied on Russian natural gas under an agreement with Gazprom. However, following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, efforts to diversify energy sources accelerated, with the country now importing natural gas from Romania.

Additionally, the Republic of Moldova has constructed a high-voltage power line linking its energy system with Romania's. Nonetheless, the majority of its electricity needs are met by a gas-fired power plant in Transnistria, which provides electricity at a fixed, relatively low price.

Norway already extends financial assistance to the Republic of Moldova through its aid program for Ukraine, including funding for gas purchases in 2023.
