Ukraine War Casts Shadow on WWII Remembrance

In Berlin, Germany's capital, authorities have banned the display of Russian flags, St. George ribbons, military uniforms, medals and decorations, military songs and marches, and any symbols glorifying Russia's war on Ukraine, including the "Z" symbol, during the events commemorating the end of World War II on May 8-9.

The ban is outlined in a police regulation made public on the evening of May 7.

The Russian Embassy in Berlin expressed strong disapproval of the decision, calling it "unacceptable" according to a report by Deutsche Welle.

The regulation prohibits these items inside and in the vicinity of commemorative monuments. Exceptions are made for World War II veterans, diplomats, and other government representatives. The restrictions also do not apply to rallies held outside the monuments and surrounding areas, provided they are conducted in accordance with legal assembly regulations.

Russian diplomats have requested that the German capital authorities lift the ban on Russian flags and symbols in the area of Soviet monuments. They view the ban as discriminatory and against the spirit of historical reconciliation between the Russian and German people in the post-war era.

This year marks the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The day is commemorated on May 8 in Germany, while Russia and most other former USSR countries observe it on May 9 due to the time zone difference at the time of the signing of Nazi Germany's surrender treaty.

The festivities surrounding the anniversary have been marred by conflicts between demonstrators from opposing sides in recent years, particularly since the outbreak of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which is now entering its third year.
