Unexpected Snow Hits Russia Before Victory Day
Moscow experienced unexpected heavy snowfall today, May 8th, on the eve of Victory Day, a major holiday commemorating Russia's defeat of Nazi Germany.
The phenomenon is unusual for this time of year, according to the EFE news agency.
Temperatures plunged to -2°C overnight and early morning, marking anomalously cold weather for early May in central Russia. Meteorologists report that Moscow is currently experiencing its coldest temperatures since the late 20th century. The cold snap is predicted to last until the weekend, with average daily highs not exceeding 10°C until mid-May.
Despite the frigid conditions, authorities confirm that the traditional Red Square military parade will proceed as planned on Thursday, May 9th. Russian President Vladimir Putin will preside over the ceremony.
Meanwhile, heavy snowfall also blanketed the Sankt-Petersburg region last night. Some areas received up to 30 centimetres of snow.
