LIVE Inauguration of the "European City" in the center of Chisinau
The European City is inaugurated in the Great National Assembly Square, where several festive events dedicated to Europe Day will take place throughout the day.
On May 9, in the Republic of Moldova, Europe Day is marked, which represents the anniversary of the historic moment represented by the Declaration of the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, who proposed the idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make the war between the nations of Europe be inconceivable. Also on this day, Victory in Europe Day is marked, which records the capitulation of Nazi Germany.
The Head of State Maia Sandu, the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, but also the European Commissioner Johannes Hahn laid flowers this morning at the "Eternitate" Memorial Complex, to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War. The three officials emphasized that today they commemorate the victims of the war, but also celebrate peace in Europe.
On this day, the head of the European Union (EU) Diplomacy in the Republic of Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks, urged Moldovans to participate in the referendum on EU accession - initiated by President Maia Sandu at the end of last year - to make their "voice heard".
On the other hand, in the former USSR, until its disintegration, May 9 was considered Victory Day in the Great War for the Defense of the Motherland. In this context, the opposition organized a march in the center of Chisinau against the background of some Soviet pieces.
