Johannes Hahn about the referendum on Moldova's accession to the EU: "It might not be necessary, from a legal point of view, but extremely useful"
At the stage in which the Republic of Moldova is in its accession process, it still does not need, from a legal point of view, to organize the referendum on EU accession, but it is a useful action. The community block needs to understand how great the interest of the Moldovan citizens is for this path. In an interview for TRM, European Commissioner Johannes Hahn stated that the election result will send a strong message about the European perspective and expectations of Moldovan citizens.
„I understand at this stage it might not be legally necessary, but I think it's extremely useful, and I would say a very smart move to have this referendum already now, provided that I am deeply convinced there will be a strong support. And this is also extremely important if there is a strong majority that we at the European Union side understand how serious the Moldovan people are about this, so that we have quasi a statement of interest, a strong interest, and that's why, I consider this referendum as extremely important and useful, because it will send a very strong signal about the European perspective and expectation of Moldova”.
On May 9, when the Republic of Moldova celebrated Europe Day, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, Jānis Mažeiks, urged Moldovans to participate in the referendum on EU accession - initiated by President Maia Sandu at the end of last year - to make their "voice heard".
We remind you that in April, the Constitutional Court gave the green light for the organization of the referendum. The vote could take place in the fall of this year, on October 20.
