Advocating for Moldova's EU Integration: Romanian Citizens' Vital Role
Participation of Romanian citizens from the left bank of the Prut in the European parliamentary elections holds significant importance.
This stems from the necessity for the future European Parliament to include a substantial number of deputies who advocate for the European trajectory of the Republic of Moldova, as stated by Adrian Dupu, the Secretary of State of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova in Bucharest.
Dupu emphasised the imperative of having MEPs in the forthcoming European Parliament who are committed to advancing Moldova's European path, striving for its swift accession to the European Union, and advocating for increased EU funding. He asserted that citizens from the left bank of the Prut have the power to influence these outcomes on May 9th.
To facilitate Romanian citizens' access to the ballot, Romania has decided to open additional polling stations in the Republic of Moldova for the European parliamentary elections on June 9th. Dupu underscored the efforts to enhance voter accessibility, acknowledging the challenges citizens faced in traversing different districts. He stressed the importance of supporting voter turnout while signalling the desire for strong representation at the polls.
Dupu anticipates up to 100,000 Moldovan citizens holding Romanian citizenship to participate in the Republic of Moldova's polling stations. Despite a significant portion residing in EU countries, he expressed confidence in a substantial number remaining in Moldova. This underscores the significance of their engagement in shaping the country's destiny and conveying messages to authorities in Bucharest and Brussels about their aspirations for Moldova's future and its relationship with the European Union.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest announced an increase in polling stations to 52 for the upcoming European parliamentary elections, compared to the 36 stations in 2019. This expansion reflects the commitment to fostering greater electoral participation.
Notably, approximately 38,000 Moldovans holding Romanian citizenship exercised their voting rights in the Republic of Moldova during the 2019 European parliamentary elections.
