Moldova Celebrates Radonitsa with Free Cemetery Transport

Orthodox Christians in Moldova observe Radonitsa, a holiday honoring the dead, on May 12th and 13th.

Traditionally, Moldovans visit cemeteries to pay respects to deceased loved ones. Bishop Ioan Moșneguțu of Soroca encourages those visiting cemeteries to maintain cleanliness and refrain from setting up elaborate memorial meals near graves.

"The Church reminds us all of our sacred duty to remember relatives who have passed away,” Bishop Moșneguțu said in an interview with Radio Moldova. "The departed require only our prayers for their memory. We offer prayers for their souls, and instead of lavish meals, we perform sincere prayers.”

Radonitsa coincides with two public holidays in Moldova, resulting in days off for many citizens. Additionally, authorities in Chișinău and other localities provide free public transportation to cemeteries during this period.

This year in Chișinău, free bus service will be available on routes 27, C, and D. Municipal public transportation will operate on a special schedule, as announced by the Chișinău City Hall. The number of buses operating on routes 10, 26, and 28 will be adjusted based on demand.

The same applies to trolleybuses on routes 12, 25, 26, 27, and 28. Bus route 19 will be extended to Doina Street and will maintain its regular schedule. More details can be found here.
