Polish Prime Minister Reveals Threats After Slovak Counterpart's Assassination Attempt

Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, has disclosed that he received threats subsequent to the attempted assassination of his Slovak counterpart, Robert Fico.

According to reports from the Polish press, security measures for the head of the Warsaw government will be fortified, as stated by Reuters.

The political atmosphere in Poland has undergone radicalization in recent years, with a poignant event being the 2019 assassination of a mayor of Gdansk. This mayor had openly criticised the anti-immigrant policies enacted by the Law and Justice Party (PiS), which was in power at the time. The Polish security service has indicated that protective measures for the Prime Minister will be reinforced in the aftermath of the attempt on Robert Fico's life.

Robert Fico, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, was shot on May 15, following a governmental session held in Handlova. The assailant, a 71-year-old man with historical ties to radical factions, has been apprehended and has acknowledged the political motives behind his actions. He articulated his disagreement with Fico's policies and expressed pride in his violent assault. Furthermore, he asserted that his intention was to harm rather than kill Robert Fico. According to Slovakian media outlets, Prime Minister Fico's health condition remains stable yet serious.
