Romania Extends Energy Lifeline to Moldova

The Romanian government issued an emergency ordinance to continue providing aid for energy supply to the Republic of Moldova.

The 2022 agreement allows Romanian electricity producers to sell electricity to traders or suppliers designated by the Moldovan government at a reference price, if Moldova cannot meet its national electricity needs through domestic production. The price includes the cost of carbon dioxide certificates, if applicable.

This decision was announced by the Romanian government spokesperson, Mhai Constantin. He also mentioned another support measure - implementing the technical and financial assistance program funded by a 100 million euro grant. Romania will contribute 11.5 million Romanian lei towards the reconstruction of the student dormitory at the Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu State University in Cahul.

The funds will be transferred to the Moldovan State Chancellery in three instalments by the end of the year, contingent on the progress of the construction work. This initiative is also included in the 100 million euro agreement.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu emphasised before the government meeting that continued energy exports are essential for Moldova's economic survival. The Romanian government will further support Moldovan law enforcement agencies with vehicles and special equipment under this agreement.
