Deconstructing Russian Rhetoric: Mihai Popșoi's Insights on Moldova's Security
In an interview with Digi24, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi asserted that despite the Kremlin's expressed desire, the Russian Federation cannot annex territories from the Republic of Moldova.
He highlighted the resilience of the Ukrainian army and the international community's solidarity as key factors preventing such actions.
Popșoi criticised the bellicose rhetoric emanating from figures like Dmitri Medvedev and Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokespersons, emphasising that Russia's intentions are not in question, but rather its capability to execute them. He expressed hope that international solidarity will continue to deter such endeavours in the future.
Addressing concerns raised by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) regarding Russia's hybrid attacks, Popșoi acknowledged the strategic significance of Moldova's proximity to Ukraine. However, he emphasised the country's commitment to European integration as a counterbalance.
Regarding the Transnistrian region, Popșoi assured that while Russia has contemplated various strategies, calm prevails. He underscored ongoing dialogue between Chisinau and authorities on the left bank of the Dniester River.
Popșoi highlighted the importance of Moldova's integration into the European single market in resolving the Transnistrian issue peacefully. He cautioned against vulnerabilities, particularly in combating disinformation and cyber threats.
ISW experts have repeatedly warned of Moscow's intentions to exploit Transnistria for hybrid attacks. While acknowledging this threat, Popșoi emphasised that Russia lacks the resources to annex the region, though it may continue to support hybrid activities along the left bank.
