Moldova: 90 Schools Get Modern Makeover
The Ministry of Education and Research announced plans to expand the "Model Schools Network" program, increasing the number of renovated schools from 35 to 90.
This initiative aims to address national needs in education by ensuring high-quality learning environments.
Minister Dan Perciun outlined the program's details during an interview on Radio Moldova's "Public Space" program. He emphasised the importance of reaching 90 schools to achieve comprehensive national coverage.
"We're starting with 35 schools, but we need to reach 90 to effectively address education needs nationwide. This program represents a key tool in our strategy," Minister Perciun stated.
The expansion plan includes investments in transportation to improve student access to these schools. Starting in September, 89 new buses will be deployed across districts to enhance transportation capacity. Additionally, the Ministry is offering financial incentives to encourage parents to enrol their children in schools with larger student populations (more than 50 students). This incentive aims to address challenges faced by smaller schools with fewer than 50 students.
The "Model Schools Network" program, launched in February 2024, targets 35 general education institutions across the country, with one school selected from each district. These schools will undergo complete renovations and be equipped with modern infrastructure, cutting-edge digital equipment, high-performing classrooms and laboratories, sports facilities, and improved transportation access. The program also includes free meal plans for students.
The first 10 schools have already been selected and will be renovated this year with financial support from the World Bank. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will provide additional financial resources to equip these 35 institutions with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment, ensuring they have access to advanced digital learning materials for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) subjects.
The total investment required to establish the Network of 35 Model Schools is estimated at 70 million euros. Currently, 14.5 million euros have been secured.
